About Chiropractic - Subluxation

Subluxation equals less than correct location.

Subluxation equals less than correct location.

The 24 moving bones of your spine protect your spinal cord while permitting normal turning and bending. Pairs of nerve roots, one on each side, branch off your spinal cord at each segmental level to service the organs and tissues of your body.

The Official Definition
The CAA – Chiropractors Association of Australia – define a subluxation as follows: “A lesion or dysfunction in a joint or motion segment in which alignment, movement integrity and/or physiological function are altered, although contact between joint surfaces remains intact. It is essentially a functional entity which influences biomechanical and neural integrity.”

The Layman’s Definition
In layman’s terms, this means openings are obstructed, even slightly. It is a body’s stress response to muscle spasm or trauma. Spinal bones lock up in sympathy and adjacent nerves become choked or chafed, in turn interfering with normal communications between the brain and parts of the body. This lack of control and regulation of the body may lead to ill-health and dis-ease.

Distorted nerve communications can be an underlying cause of many health problems beyond just headaches and back pain. For example, interference with nerve impulses between the brain and the stomach could result in stomach problems such as reflux, indigestion and ulcers.

Think of the phone as your brain and the person on the other end as your body but the network in between is dropping out.

Chiropractors use gentle and specific adjustments to correct these ‘vertebral subluxations’ that can occur through emotional, physical or chemical stresses. The nervous system controls every cell, tissue, organ and system of the body. These nerve impulses travel through your spine like mobile phone calls through a network. So having a reliable network provider is like having a spine free of vertebral subluxation – good for communications.

ONLY a chiropractic examination can detect subluxations and ONLY chiropractic adjustments can reduce their effect on the nervous system.

Nervous System Physiology
Virtually every cell, tissue, organ and system of the body is controlled and regulated by the nervous system. While the complex chemical and electrical nature of this vast network is best left to others to explain, here are four key things you should know:

Neurological Circuits
When the neurological circuits are working correctly, the body works as intended.

Spinal Vertebrae
When spinal vertebrae pinch or choke nerves, affected organs and tissues don’t work the way they should and ill-health results.

Efferent Communications
Nerve impulses are sent from the brain out to the organs and tissues of your body.

Afferent Communications
Nerve impulses are sent back to the brain to confirm everything is working correctly.

The nervous system sends ‘afferent' messages to, and ‘efferent' messages from, the brain.

Frequently Asked Questions:

? How come I’ve never heard of subluxations before?

Subluxations have not received the press that say, AIDS, cancer, cholesterol or heart disease have, however, subluxations are just as important and are often the underlying cause of a wide variety of health problems.

? What causes subluxations?

There are three basic causes of subluxations. Physical causes include slips and falls, accidents, repetitive motions and improper lifting. Chemical causes can include alcohol, drugs, pollution and poor diet. Emotional causes include anger and fear. Physical, chemical and emotional causes of subluxations are situations and experiences which leads to stress we encounter in everyday life.

? How can subluxations be corrected?

The primary form of care to reduce subluxations is a schedule of chiropractic adjustments. Adjustments are specific in direction, speed, depth and angle and are implemented through a thorough understanding of spinal mechanics. Over time, with repeated treatment, the position and alignment of spinal bones introduces change.

? How can I tell if I have subluxations?

You can have subluxations and not even know it. Like the early stages of tooth decay or cancer, subluxations can be present before warning signs appear. The results of a thorough examination can show the location and severity of any subluxations you may have.

? Can subluxations clear up on their own?

Sometimes. Today’s hectic lifestyles are a constant source of subluxations. Fortunately, our bodies have the ability to self-correct many of these minor problems as we bend and stretch or when we sleep at night. When subluxations don’t resolve, see a chiropractor for help.
